About Us
The African Ophthalmology Council is the supranational organization for ophthalmologists and other eye care professional on the African Continent. History Ophthalmologists in Africa have long needed a Supranational organization to represent their profession, their organization and their patients. The African Ophthalmology Council (AOC) was formally formed in 2014, but it has roots in the African Leadership Group (ALG) and African Ophthalmology Forum(AOF), which date back to 2007. The AOC was created in with the support of MEACO and the ICO. Until 2009, the AOF received most of its financial and operational support from MEACO. After the Arab Spring, MEACO could no longer provide support. This provided an ideal opportunity for the AOF to establish itself as an independent entity. This lead to the formation of the African Ophthalmology Council (AOC) in March 2014 at the Ophthalmology Society of South Africa (OSSA) Congress in South Africa. The AOC received recognition from the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and officially launched on April 3, 2014 at the WOC meeting in Tokyo, Japan.
